The Embassy of Ireland, South Korea, and The Irish Association of Korea are very proud to announce the second Irish-Korean Essay Competition for university students in Korea. The competition seeks to raise awareness about connections between both Ireland and Korea, and allows contestants to compete for an opportunity to experience Ireland from an educational, cultural, and academic perspective. The competition offers the winner an opportunity to study in one of Ireland’s leading private language institutes for one month.
Participants are invited to write an essay in the traditional format on any particular subject, provided that it is related to the topic Anniversaries.
Details of the Competition
The competition will be administered by the Irish Association of Korea, a non-profit organisation which actively seeks to promote Ireland and all that falls under the banner of ‘Irishness’ within Korea, and supported by the Embassy of Ireland in Seoul. The competition is designed to highlight Ireland as a leading location for study abroad, and as a unique and fascinating cultural destination.
The topic for this year’s competition is Anniversaries.
First prize will include one month of study in the Emerald Cultural Institute (www.eci.ie), including accommodation, return flights from Korea to Dublin, and a cash prize. There will also be a cash and cultural prize awarded to second place, while third, fourth and fifth place will be awarded cultural prizes. The total value of the prizes is approximately 9 million Korean won.
The competition is open to full-time, registered, under-graduate university students in Korea[2] , who use or study English as a second language. [The competition is not open to students who speak English as a native language. Students must be enrolled as a full-time student and not as an exchange student or post-graduate student.]
Essays may be written in any style the participant wishes but it is expected that all sources will be referred to using the appropriate academic format. The minimum length for each entry must not be less than 1,500 words and no more than 2000 words. All essays must be written in the English language.
The deadline for submissions has been set for November 30, 2012 at 5pm. All submissions must be sent to the Embassy of Ireland seoulembassy@dfa.ie.
There is no fee required for entry to this competition.

Why Anniversaries?
2013 will be a big year for Irish-Korean relations in terms of anniversaries – 80 years of the Columbans in Korea; 60 years since the end of Korean War and 30 years of Diplomatic Relations, and the Irish Association of Korea would like to inspire thoughtful considerations of what anniversaries represent.
Of most importance to all in Korea, 2013 will mark the 60th anniversary of the end of hostilities in the Korean War, a tragedy which tore Korea apart and still profoundly affects life on the peninsula today. Veterans and all those related to those who fought and died during the war will inevitably reflect on the conflict and its painful legacy.
During the conflict a large number of Irish people died while fighting under the flags of other nations, notably Britain and the US. The Embassy of Ireland and the Irish Association of Korea in collaboration with the Somme Association in Northern Ireland are working towards erecting a memorial to all those who died. The Irish Association of Korea are currently leading a drive to raise funds for this memorial with the aim of completing this in 2013. (http://iak.co.kr/irish-war-memorial/ for details)
Ireland will also be celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea. Also of significance will be the 80th year anniversary of the first notable Irish presence in Korea, the Columban missions, seven of whom died during the Korean War.
This year the organisers are proud to welcome the Listowel Writers Week (www.writersweek.ie) into the judging panel. In return for assisting with the judging of winners, the winning essay will be published the Winners Anthology at the festival, a recognised anthology of writing published by the leading writers’ festival in Ireland.

2012 아일랜드- 한국 에세이 공모전 개최
주한 아일랜드 대사관과 아일랜드 협회는 한국 내의 대학생들을 위한 제 2회 아일랜드-한국 에세이 공모전의 개최를 알리게 되어 매우 영광스럽게 생각합니다. 이번 공모전의 주된 목적은 한국과 아일랜드 양국 간의 교류 증진입니다. 참가자들은 이번 공모전으로 교육, 문화 및 학문 등의 여러 관점에서 아일랜드를 경험하는 기회를 얻게 될 것입니다. 공모전의 우승자는 아일랜드 굴지의 사립 어학기관에서 한 달간 어학연수의 기회를 제공받게 됩니다. 이번 공모전의 주제인 기념일과 관계된 내용을 에세이 형식으로 작성하여 제출하면 됩니다.
공모전의 세부사항
이번 공모전은 한국에서 아일랜드와 “아일랜드의 것”을 알리는 것을 추구하는, 비영리 단체인 주한 아일랜드 협회가 주관하게 되며 또한 아일랜드 대사관의 후원을 받게 됩니다. 이번 공모전은 아일랜드가 최적의 해외 유학지중 하나라는 것과, 고유하고 매력적인 문화를 가진 나라임을 알리기 위한 취지로 고안되었습니다.
올 해 공모전 주제는 기념일 입니다.
최종우승자에게는, 홈 스테이 숙박, 더블린-한국간의 왕복 항공권 그리고 상금 등을 포함한, 더블린에 위치하고 있는 The Emerald Cultural Institute (www.eci.ie) 에서의 한 달간의 수학 기회가 제공됩니다. 준 우승자는 상금과 문화관련 상품을 받게 됩니다. 3, 4, 5위를 차지한 참가자도 문화관련 상품을 받게 됩니다. 본 공모전의 총 상금은 약 구백만원 상당입니다.

왜 주제는 기념일인가?
2013년은 골롬반 외방 선교회 한국 파견 80주년, 한국전쟁 종전 60주년, 아일랜드–한국 외교관계 수립30주년 등 아일랜드-한국 관계에서 매우 중요한 해입니다. 그리고 아일랜드 협회는 무엇이 기념일을 상징하는지에 대한 영감을 주고자 합니다.
한국인들에게 2013년은 한반도의 분단을 초래하고 오늘날까지 영향을 미치고 있는 한국전쟁 종전 60주년이 되는 중요한 해 일 것입니다. 한편 참전용사들과 전사자들의 가족들은 고통스런 과거의 유산을 떠올리게 될 것입니다.
한국전쟁 중에 다른 나라의, 특히 영국과 미국의 병사로 참전한 많은 아일랜드인들이 전사하였습니다. 주한 아일랜드 대사관, 아일랜드 협회 그리고 북아일랜드의 Somme Association (전쟁기념 재향 군인회) 과 협력하여 2013년까지 아일랜드 전사자들을 기리는 기념비 건립을 목표로 모금 활동을 하고 있습니다.

이와 함께 아일랜드는 아일랜드–한국 외교관계 수립30주년과 또한 처음으로 한국에 거주했던 아일랜드 골롬반 외방 선교회 소속 선교사의 파견80주년이 되는 2013년을 기념 할 예정입니다. (그들 중 7명은 한국전 당시 순직)
아일랜드 협회 회장이며 경희대 전임 강사로 재직중인 Conor O’Reilly는, 기념일은 전 세계적으로 축하하고 기념하기도 하지만 또한 아주 개인적인 것일 수도 있다고 합니다. “우리는 모두 결혼 기념일과 같은 기념일을 가지고 있습니다. 그러나, 우리는 우리 삶에 계속 영향을 미치는 인생에서 중요한 순간들은 거의 기념하지 않습니다.” 2005년부터 한국에서 살고 있는 그는, 모든 기념일이 공식적이며 달력에 기록된 것은 아니지만 거기엔 하나의 공통된 특징이 있으며 “우리가 기념일을 가짐으로써 자신의 삶과 다른 사람의 삶에 일어난 일들을 기억하게 됩니다.”라고 덧붙였습니다.
올해는 영광스럽게도 Listowel Writers Week (www.writerswe.ie) 참여 작가들을 심사위원으로 모시며, 당선작은 아일랜드 주요 작가들의 축제에서 발행하는 문집인 Winners Anthology 에 게재될 예정입니다.
