Korea’s Most Celebrated Foreign Festival Saved by Seoul Government

– 2009 St. Patrick’s Day Festival to focus on community spirit thanks to “rub of the green” –

(Seoul, 09.03.09) With business tightening its belt buckle in the face of the prevailing global economic downturn, one of Korea’s largest and most well-attended foreign festivals has received last-minute funding to ensure its celebration in 2009.  Thanks to sponsorship and assistance from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korean Air, Diageo Korea (Guinness), the Wolfhound, Dublin Terrace, and the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Seoul’s 9^th Irish Festival – 2009 St. Patrick’s Day Festival – will go ahead as planned in Daehangno on Saturday, March 14^th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Attracting an estimated 18,000 attendees in 2008, the Irish Festival, organized by the Irish Association of Korea (IAK), was in danger of not going ahead this year as significant corporate sponsorship was not renewed.  The traditional and colorful street parade is a costly venture, and the festival in Seoul had also traditionally been accompanied with a free open air concert and fair.  However, thanks to our loyal support from long-standing sponsors, this year’s festival will focus on continuing to build community spirit.

 

“Guess we got the rub of the green again!” joked Kevin Tobin, Chairman of the IAK.  (Editor’s note: Ireland is commonly associated with the color green and good luck, particularly in North American and the United Kingdom.) “Every year we get more and more involvement and participation from Korean and non-Irish community groups and individuals, and there is an unwritten expectation in Seoul that this event will take place. 

 

“As a group of volunteers, both Irish and Korean, we rely on the spirit of the community and other groups to make our event a success.  This is what St. Patrick’s Day is about: sharing and celebrating cultural diversity together.”

 

The Festival will feature both Irish and Korean samul nori and dance, Dongguk cheerleaders, including one brass, three Irish traditional bands, U2 cover rock ‘’n’ roll, traditional Irish music plus traditional Irish dance, featuring exhibition step dancing.  The audience will be invited to participate in what has become a Seoul Irish Festival tradition – Irish folk dancing. There will be an informal parade through the streets of Ihwa-dong, east of Daehagno Boulevard, starting and ending at Marronnier Park. The IAK is calling on all Koreans and members of the foreign community to participate in and support this friendship march and to celebrate Ireland’s national holiday by wearing green.  The IAK will accommodate all non-profit groups wishing to follow our bagpiper in our St. Patrick’s Parade as we wind through the streets of Ilwha-dong, around Marronnier Park.

Editors Note

 

The festival commemorates Saint Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. It is sponsored by

 

Ireland’s No.1 beer, Guinness, to promote the festival in Seoul alongside similar

 

festivals in countries from Ireland to the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. 

 

 People visiting Marronnier Park, Daehagno on the 14^th are welcomed to

 

enjoy traditional Irish  dance and traditional music performance,

 

and take part or support the Grand Parade  by wearing green costumes.

한국 최대의 외국인 축제가 막바지 기부를 받아 2009년 축제의 명성을 공고히 했습니다. 서울시,

 

대한항공, 디아지오 코리아(Guinness), 그리고 그랜드 하얏트 호텔, The wolfhound, 더블린

 

테라스의 후원과 협조에 감사 드리며, 서울에서의 9번째 아이리쉬 축제인 2009년 성 패트릭 데이

 

페스티발은 예정대로 3월 14일 토요일 오전 11시부터 오후 5시까지 대학로에서 개최됨을

 

알려드립니다

 

 

지난해 대략 18000명의 참가자를 모은 IAK의 축제는, 올해 후원의 부족으로 개최가 불투명한

상황이었습니다. 전통적인 길거리 퍼레이드는 비용이 많이 드는 행사이며, 또한 무료 야외공연과

전시도 제공되어 왔습니다. 하지만 오랫동안 함께 해 준 스폰서들의 아낌없는 지원 덕분에, 올해의

축제는 공동체의식의 구축을 계속해 나가는데 초점을 맞출 예정입니다.

 

“아마도 또 운 좋게 넘어갈 거 같아!”  IAK회장 Kevin Tobin이 농담처럼 말했습니다. (Editor’s note:

특히 북미나 영국에서 아일랜드는 초록색을 행운의 상징으로 여겨왔습니다.)   “한국인과

비아일랜드계 집단, 또는 개인의 참여가 매년 증가했고, 서울에서 이 행사가 있을거라는 암묵적인

기대가 생기게 되었습니다. “ 

“아이리쉬와 한국인 자원봉사자로서, 우리의 성공은 지역공동체 의식과 다른 그룹에 달려

있습니다. -문화적 다양성을 함께 나누고 즐기는 것- 이것이 성 패트릭 데이의 목적입니다.”

 

축제에는 아일랜드와 한국의 사물놀이와 전통 춤, 동국대학교 치어리더 공연, 금관악기 밴드와

세 팀의 아일랜드 전통 밴드, U2 노래를 공연할 락앤롤, 전통 아일랜드 춤을 가미한 전통 아일랜드

 음악을 포함한 아일랜드, 한국의 음악과 춤, 스텝댄스 공연을 선보일 예정입니다. 관객들은

이제는 서울 아이리쉬 페스티벌의 전통이 된 아이리쉬 포크 댄싱에 참여할 수 있습니다. 비공식

 퍼레이드는 마로니에 공원에서 시작하고 끝나며, 일화동 거리와 대학로 거리 동쪽을 지날

예정입니다. IAK는 모든 한국인과 외국인 커뮤니티 맴버들에게 이 우애 있는 행진의 참여 및

 협조를 위해, 또 아일랜드의 국가휴일을 축하하기 위해 초록색 옷을 입을 것을 요청했습니다.

 IAK는 성 패트릭 데이 축제 퍼레이드에서 풍적을 부는 선두를 따라 마로니에 공원 근처에 있는

일화동 거리를 통과해 행진하길 원하는 모든 비영리그룹을 길거리 퍼레이드에 수용할 것입니다.
